Guest Post & Excerpt: Torment by LM Pruitt @lmpruitt

The Block

It was a dark and stormy night.
Except it isn’t. It’s a relatively bright day, with the temperature already in the eighties and the humidity almost certain to take it higher. The ducks are everywhere, in all sizes, as well as the geese (who are absolute assholes, by the way). The other coffee shop patrons are being their normal, cliquey, I’m more important because I’m old selves. It’s a completely normal, almost boring morning.
Which may explain why I had to revert to a cliché in order to get an opening sentence for this post.
There’s a belief that there’s no such thing as writer’s block. That a writer not writing is simply being lazy and unprofessional and so on and so forth. If you’re a writer, you write, damn it, because that’s what you do.
Which is why, I think, people find it difficult to understand that sometimes you simply can’t.
Sometimes there aren’t words—at least not ones which belonged to you first. Sometimes there are words but they’re so disjointed and so useless you might have been better off writing nothing at all. And sometimes there’s… nothing. Having a blank mind is, without a doubt, one of the most terrifying things which can happen to a writer (outside of breaking a bone in their hands or wrists).
And so we resort to oddities, not to clear our mind but to clutter it up. If there’s a jumble of things floating around, one of them will spark an idea or a thought and burn down the wall. Some writers reread their work. Others turn to music or television.
I turn to clichés.
So this morning, it’s a dark and stormy night. One which, hopefully, will give me something to write about.

And maybe get rid of the geese.

Excerpt:

“You’ll catch cold if you stay out here much longer.”
I didn’t turn around, continuing to study the skyline. “I’m fine.”
“It’s three in the morning. You should be asleep.” He didn’t sound angry about the fact I wasn’t or the fact I was standing outside in late September in sleep pants and a thin cotton tank. If anything, his scolding sounded as if it was for form and nothing else. “It’s been a long day for all of us.”
“Yes.” Now I did turn around, studying Barry with the same intensity I’d shown the various buildings of Prague. “Why are you mad at me?”
“I’m not mad.” He pulled a cigar from the pocket of his sleep pants but didn’t light it, staring at the tip for a moment before sliding it back in his pocket. “I’m tired, Julie. As I said, it’s been a long day. The next few days—weeks, rather—promise to be equally long. We all need to sleep, to keep our strength up for what lies ahead.”
“You haven’t touched me since we got back.” Since he stood in front of my sister and ripped her heart out and then walked away without a backward glance. “You’ve barely said anything all night long.”
“As I said, I’m tired.” He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a long sigh. “There’s been quite a bit of upheaval in the last thirty-six hours or so. Quite a bit. Forgive me if I’m not my usual charming self. You have more than enough people here to pay you attention if you’re feeling uncared for.”
“That’s not what I meant.” I turned back to the city view, widening my eyes and blinking rapidly in an effort to keep the tears at bay. I didn’t have a problem with using tears as a weapon when they were called for but I wouldn’t use them with him, ever. “You’re right. It’s late. Go to sleep. I’m fine.”
“We both know I’m not going to sleep until you do.” I heard the sound of metal scraping over concrete and glanced over my shoulder to find he’d pulled one of the patio chairs free of the table. Sitting down and stretching out his legs, he said, “As long as you’re here, I’m here.”
“Barry—.”
“Arguing will only frustrate us both, Julie Elizabeth, and we’ve had enough frustration for the day.” He slid further down in the seat, almost slouching, and crossed his arms. “As long as you’re here, I’m here.”
“But do you want to be here?” The question tumbled out before I even realized it was in my mind and I bit my tongue, already regretting it. “Never mind. You don’t have to answer that.”
“Come here.” When I didn’t move, he uncrossed his arms and held out one hand. “Please.”
Crossing the balcony, I took his hand, curling up in his lap and resting my head on his shoulder. We sat in silence for a few minutes before he cleared his throat. “I don’t know any other way to say it. I can simply say as long as you’re here, I’m here. When you want to leave, we’ll leave.”
“And where would we go?” Joanne’s face in the instant after Barry verbally sucker punched her, Asmodeus’s face the second after I shot him, flashed through my mind and I hunched my shoulders as if the memory carried a physical blow. “There’s no place left. We burned all those bridges today.”
“The thing about bridges is they can always be rebuilt and when they are, they’re stronger than before they burned.” He brushed my hair away from my face, stroking one hand down my back and pulling me tighter against him. “But since you don’t want to leave, the discussion is moot.”
“We’re doing the right thing.”
“The right thing done the wrong way is no longer the right thing.”
“If there was a way to do this differently, we would have taken it.” We’d tried to take it. We’d tried to meet the others halfway. Nobody—Lilith, Asmodeus, the Power, Morning Star—wanted to bend.
So we would have to break them.
“After the raids begin today, there is no turning back. You and your supporters will be branded traitors. There will be bounties on your heads.” He pressed his lips to my hair, breathing deep. “On all our heads. You’ve never lived through a war.”
It wasn’t a question but I answered anyway. “No, I haven’t.”
“I’ve been through more than my fair share, even considering my age. When it’s impossible to die from manmade weapons, you tend to fight in wars simply to alleviate the boredom.” He turned, pressing his face in to my hair. “And they’re nothing compared to supernatural wars. So far you’ve only seen the pretty side of Hell. There are things which will be unleashed which should never exist out of nightmares.”
“On us or by us?”
“Both.” His hand shook as he stroked my back and I wasn’t sure if he was trying to comfort me or himself. “Some things can’t be unseen or unfelt. You’ll carry it with you until the day you die.”
“Are you trying to scare me?”
“I’m trying to warn you. Up until now, everything about this war has been theoretical. Until today, no true shots were fired.” He drew back, his face unnaturally somber, even for him. “I know you did what you had to do and I don’t fault you for that decision.”
“But I officially started the war.” I nodded. “I know. I’ll live with it.”
“Things will get worse.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead. “They always do.”
“And then they get better.” I had to believe that. If I didn’t, then there was a good chance I was wrecking and ruining lives for no reason at all. I pressed my lips to his, lightly, for comfort more than anything else. “Things will be better. We’re going to make them better.”
We didn’t have any other choice.

Excerpt:
Squinting, Ziva tried to see who’d spoken in a deep, smooth-as-silk British accent.
A tall man stood before her and greeted her with an alluring, lopsided smile that exuded confidence. Kind eyes crinkled at the corners.
His broad shoulders were clad in a navy, tailored business suit. With his thick hair, a rich, burnt umber colour, slicked back off his forehead, and an angular, clean-shaven jaw, the guy could have stepped off the set of a TV advert for men’s cologne. And his lips… oh boy, his lips. Full, well-defined, and made for sinning.
Her mouth dried. Kuala Lumpur grew more interesting by the second.
Elise filled in for her temporary inability to speak. “No, we haven’t. My sister failed to mention Pavilion or Lot 10. I’m afraid she doesn’t share my love for shopping.”
Surprise flashed across his face before his smile widened then hitched higher in one corner. Yep, male model material. Just my luck if he’s gay.
Elise shifted from one foot to the other and adjusted her hold on her dozen or so shopping bags. “Are the malls far?”
“No, not far. They’re near the Golden Triangle part of the city.”
Ziva stifled another groan. More malls, right near where they were staying.
The guy tipped his head. “I’m Sam, by the way.” Sophisticated charm oozed from every pore. “It’s lovely to meet two beautiful English roses so far from home.” Although he spoke to both of them, he directed an intense gaze at Ziva. Mischievous cobalt eyes sparkled in the bright sunlight then he winked at her. Hmm, not gay then.
“Hi, I’m Elise,” her sister said, sticking out her chest. “Nice to meet you, too.” She shuffled her feet again. “My feet are roasting standing here.”
Ziva glanced at Elise’s unsuitable choice of footwear as she stood on a drain cover. “I’m not surprised your feet are hot. It’s ninety-five degrees and you’re wearing high-heeled boots. I told you to wear your flat sandals.”
Elise rolled her eyes. “Flat sandals do not go with this outfit,” she said resignedly. “Kuala Lumpur is home to some of the best shopping malls in South East Asia—who cares about a little discomfort?”
“So, you were listening when I read out the tourist brochure and the amazing places I’d like to visit.”
“No, not really.” Elise gave an apologetic shrug. “I heard ‘shopping malls’ mostly.”
Sam laughed. His attention never left Ziva. “And your name is…?”
The crowd surged forward to cross the road. Someone jostled past Ziva, accidentally knocking her elbow. Her tatty canvas handbag and her one and only shopping bag dropped to the ground. She gasped as her new lingerie tumbled onto the dusty pavement. “Oh, crap!”
Stooping to her haunches, she then hastily stuffed lacy bras and matching thongs back into the paper bag. Her blonde curls tumbled over her face, helping to hide cheeks that burned hotter than the pavement. A serious contender for Miss Tiny Tits UK, she’d been spoiled for choice when she’d seen that the malls in KL catered for smaller women, so she’d treated herself to a few items of sexy underwear. Not that she had an occasion to wear it, but still, the last thing she needed was to have it displayed for all to see.
Sam kneeled in front of her, picked up a black bra, and swung it on his finger. “Here, I think you missed one.”
Head still down, she reached for the bra, but he hooked his finger around the strap and held it firm. She tugged. “Let go.”
“Not until you tell me your name.” He tugged back, stretching the lace and elastic across the distance between them. “And not until you look at me.”

Interview with LM. Preston, author of Fierce Tides!

Hi LM Preston Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I grew up in Washington, DC but also lived in Maryland and Virginia. Even so, I was very uneasy about moving out of those areas. I loved traveling and did so with my kids and husband. Then we recently took a huge leap and moved to our dream location.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Yeah, my character’s have issues, and if you to have them, you have to remember that you own your feelings, your destiny, your dreams, and you can do anything. Even when people, circumstances are built up around you that say you can’t. How do I know that’s true, well because I have overcome many obstacles and no one, nothing, can take away my smile and the strength I’ve gained through the school of hard knocks. So I hope you enjoy my characters, because each one of them hold a strength I found in each and every young person I’ve known.

Can you tell us a little bit about your book Fierce Tides?

Fierce Tides is the final book in my Purgatory Reign Series. It’s an action packed, paranormal, romance with a splash of adventure, that takes the reader through several cities, into secret hidden sanctuaries while on the run with Peter Saints, our seventeen year old hero and his friends.

Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

The characters always come first for me. I build their profiles, find pictures of people that look like them, and then their story hits me. I build the outline for the book only after I’ve build the character profiles.

Can we expect more novels from you in 2011?

Insatiable Souls is a new release coming in November. EmVee is my main character who moves to a new neighborhood and home with many secrets, but the biggest secret is why her father moved them there.

Your life is a romantic comedy; what humors but very embarrassing thing happens on your first date/when you meet the love of your life?

I took my ‘aunt’ along to meet my now husband at the bus stop. My friend had set us up on a blind date. My aunt and I were both the same age and she had explicate directions to scope out the bus and decide if we should ditch him if guy was a dud.

Now, the moment of truth – I laid eyes on him and was like, “WOWSA!” I literally had to gulp my heart back in my chest.

He looked at me and smiled (I believe he was thinking the same thing – but I was wrong.)

I stood there and grinned like a fool, then tripped forward as my cousin elbowed me. Oh…forgot she was still there. I whispered to her, “Beat it!” and she promptly left.

Then I looked back at him and he was frowning…yep, frowning. The first thing he said to me was, “Ummm, you don’t look like what I thought. Are you sure you’re 15? I mean…you are really small. How tall are you?”

Okay, yeah, I’m only about 5ft to his 6ft 2inches, but I was funsized!

What is your favorite part of writing?
The escape of becoming another person, being in another place, and believing that I can control the outcome, but most writers know that the characters seem to control the story.

Random Quickies!

When do you prefer to read?
I read mostly at night before I go to bed, or in the car while my husband is driving.

Vampires or Werewolves?  Vampires all the way. I’ve been a vampire lover since I was twelve years old and trust me, that was a long time ago.

Ebook or hardcover/paperback? Well, if you would’ve asked me this question about five years ago I would be paperback all the way. But now, I have way more ebooks than I do paperback and I’ve read mostly all of them that are on my ereader or cellphone.

Favorite color? Green, and believe it or not, that’s been my favorite color for as long as I can remember.

Peter Saints thought it was over. The evil that hunted him, tried to control him, even to consume him wouldn’t die easily. It was released. The man, the manipulator wanted blood. This time, Peter would be the hunter and destroy the evil machine that threatened take mankind to a dark age. He only hoped that his love for Angel could sustain them through the torture they’d have to endure. It was all for her, for them. Interview with Jennifer Chase, author of Dead Cold! @jchasenovelist

Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi! Thanks for interviewing me. I’m an award winning author and consulting criminologist. I’ve worked in the business world and decided to change professions about ten years ago. I spend some of my time studying and consulting on cold cases. When I’m not working, I love photography, hiking, and spending times with my newest German shepherd dog rescue. I live in California with my husband and I’m working and researching my next book.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

You’re the most awesome readers/fans that any author could ask for. Thank you so much for supporting my Emily Stone Series—all of you make it so worthwhile.

Can you tell us a little bit about your book?

What happens when one California community has a disturbing spike in homicides? It catapults cops into a deadly game of murder. Frozen human body parts hideously displayed at the crime scenes offers a horrifying interpretation that only a sadistic serial killer could design—and execute.

On the hunt for a complex serial killer, vigilante detective Emily Stone must face her most daring case yet. Stone’s proven top-notch profiling skills and forensic expertise may not be enough this time.

Emily Stone’s covert team pushes with extreme urgency to unravel the grisly clues, while keeping their identities hidden from the police. With one last-ditch effort, Stone dangles someone she loves as bait to draw out the killer. She then forces the killer out of their comfort zone

Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

The characters.

You’re out demon hunting (because you’re that kind of awesome) and you come across one about to kill a young couple. He has not seen you yet; what is your first course of action?

My first course of action would be to create some type of diversion (sound, yell, rustling, rock, etc.) to take the demon’s focus away from the couple.

Can we expect more novels from you in 2017/2018?

Yes, there will be the second Chip Palmer Forensic Mystery, Scene of the Crime, which will be out in the Fall. The next Emily Stone Thriller, Dark Lies, will be out Winter (early 2018).

Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

Absolutely. Mystery or thriller is definitely my favorite genre, but I’ve been working on some short horror stories that could become full-length horror novels.

What was your inspiration for this novel, or the series in general?

My inspiration for the series is a combination of my academic pursuits because of my curiosity about the criminal mind as well as my own experience with a violent sociopath.

Why this genre?

I love thrillers—all types of thrillers my entire adult life. The 1980s action movies helped to inspire my writing. There’s nothing more exciting than chasing and outsmarting the bad guys, pushing characters to their limits, and rooting for the underdog.

What is your favorite part of writing?

I love to write and create my storylines. My favorite part of writing is the research, finding that interesting tidbit to pull something unusual into the storyline through forensics or behavioral profiling.

Random Quickies!

Supernatural or Psych? (TV Shows)
Psych.

Favorite color?
All the blues in the Pacific Ocean.

Favorite genre to read?
Thriller.

Cats or dogs?
Dogs.

From the multi-award winning series:

What happens when one California community has a disturbing spike in homicides? It catapults cops into a deadly game of murder. Frozen human body parts hideously displayed at the crime scenes offers a horrifying interpretation that only a sadistic serial killer could design—and execute.

On the hunt for a complex serial killer, vigilante detective Emily Stone must face her most daring case yet. Stone’s proven top-notch profiling skills and forensic expertise may not be enough this time.

Young and ambitious, Detective Danny Starr, catches the homicide cases and discovers that it will test everything he knows about police work and the criminal mind. Can he handle these escalating cases or will the police department have to call in reinforcements—the FBI.

Emily Stone’s covert team pushes with extreme urgency to unravel the grisly clues, while keeping their identities hidden from the police. With one last-ditch effort, Stone dangles someone she loves as bait to draw out the killer. She then forces the killer out of their comfort zone with her partner Rick Lopez, and with help from a longtime friend Jordan Smith. A revelation of the serial killer’s identity leaves the team with volatile emotions that could destroy them.

The killer continues to taunt and expertly manipulate the police, as well as Stone’s team, and as they run out of time—they leave behind everyone and everything—in Dead Cold.
